Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position.

As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of political warfare.

While the term propaganda has acquired a strongly negative connotation by association with its most manipulative and jingoistic examples, propaganda in its original sense is neutral, and may also be construed to refer to uses which are generally held to be relatively benign or innocuous, such as public health recommendations, signs encouraging citizens to participate in a census or election, or messages encouraging persons to report crimes to the police, among others.

How was propaganda effectively used during the Cold War?
Q. I'm doing a research paper on propaganda and how it was effectively used on the people (in the Soviet Union and the United States). I just need a few reasons to say why it was effective. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Why was poster propaganda so effective during the World Wars?
Q. Since every country seems to have released a plethora of propaganda during both wars, what is it that made it effective? Assuming of course it was, which it seemed to be. Just looking back it seemed so hard to believe that posters like those would make people that excited to fight. They were so unrealistic it was just ridiculous! Then again, it does seem that every country had its dose of totalitarianism back then... Oh, I see. It's a combination of things. Thanks everyone! :)

A. It was the cheapest way to advertise. As simple as that. Printing a few thousand posters costs next to nothing. Plaster them everywhere, so they will be seen by the general public. Nothing else comes close with regard to price/quality. There were certainly better ways, but they were always far more expensive and reached a much smaller audience.

How did the propaganda department of Stalin's government influence Stalin's rise to power?
Q. I am referring to how Squealer in the book Animal Farm is supposed to represent the propaganda department of Stalin's government and he helped Napoleon rise to power.

A. Squealer is supposed to represent a mix of Molotov and propaganda. Molotov was Stalin's most loyal aide. he could be relied upon by Stalin to berate opponents, to argue Stalin's cause or to back him when others were wavering. In the early days of the Revolution an organisation called Proletkult was set up to provide funding for artists and to make art for the workers not for the wealthy: It was organised by Agitprop - the Agitation and Propaganda department. These organisation made or commissioned posters, films, pamphlets and plays to explain and to educate the people about the revolution. In truth, propaganda did not play a significant part in Stalin's rise to power. Propaganda is aimed at the people to tell them how to think, not… [cont.]
